Fresh Squeezed

It's always kind of neat to me when an unexpected event unfolds.  Let me rephrase...when an unexpected event unfolds that doesn't involve an injury, a tantrum, or something needing to be cleaned.  Those kind happen every day here.  I'm talking about those little moments that you wish you could just watch forever because there's something amazing in watching a father teach his daughter how to make fresh squeezed orange juice.

It started out as a fairly ordinary morning.  But after breakfast Isis decided that she wanted to have an orange juice stand in case anybody was thirsty...an orange juice stand being the equivalent to a lemonade stand which is what everybody has a hankering for on a cold February morning.  But Chris, being the father who grasps teachable moments, humored Isis and suggested that they make the orange juice.  Isis, being the daughter who just got her very own kitchen knife, was happy to oblige.

I guess it was probably helpful that we had a crate of fresh mandarin oranges on hand.  So after much cutting and squeezing, Isis and Daddy had enough fresh juice to operate a successful orange juice stand.  Isis began collecting old shot glasses because for some reason she loves to only offer you a smidgen of juice.  I secretly think it's because she loves pouring so much that she knows if she only gives you a shot, that you will certainly ask for another. And another.  And yes please one more.

So with much pride and even more giddiness, Isis was ready to open up shop.  See, when Isis has a lemonade stand, you have to pretend to be thirsty and talk out loud about how you wish you knew someone who had something to drink.  As she arranged everything she loudly demanded to Chris, Now go get thirsty.  And sometimes what amazes me most is how well he plays along with her.  Because he did go get thirsty. He walked into the living and started doing push ups until he was thirsty.  And Isis served him orange juice. And then he got thirsty again, with more push ups.  And Isis served him orange juice.  And Chris got thirsty so many times that he actually got thirsty and this was exactly how Isis had pictured the whole thing.

Sometimes I get to be a part of these unexpected events.  But I often find that I am just as blessed by seeing and not doing.  I love watching a father and his daughter.  Sometimes you love a man for who he is.  And sometimes you love him for how much he loves someone else.
