A Month in Pictures, Stories, and Farm Life

Story #1...The Skunk Epidemic

One morning we awoke to find a cute little skunk sitting in our driveway helping himself to the apricots that had fallen there.  While the girls thought this was fantastically cute, I pictured Eliza wandering outside to pet it and panicked.  Plus a skunk in my driveway is a fairly large obstacle between me and my car.  So we set this here trap and caught this guy...

and then this one here...

So what exactly does one do with a live skunk?  They call their neighbor and then secretly take pictures of the poor sucker...

Yes, for five straight days our wonderful neighbor (who owns firearm a step above Chris's bee bee gun) came to our rescue.  And while we had the heart to trap the skunks live, he toted them into a nearby field and took care of them Ole Yeller style.  No worries, he was repaid with a plate of homemade cookies cause that is how we do favors here on the farm.  I am also happy to report that in addition to five polecats, we also trapped a very unhappy wild cat and also one of our chickens.

Story #2...Eliza and Her Barbies

A few days ago Eliza asked me for a snack.  Minutes later I found her inside her tent, happier than a possum eatin' poop off a flat rock, with her clementines and "Aunt Karla" and "Uncle Bri" on her lap. You heard me right. Obviously the black Barbie is Aunt Karla and obviously the white Barbie is Uncle Bri.  Actually Eliza has named every black baby in our house Aunt Karla.  And later in the day she gave Uncle Bri a bath and was yelling Mommy, I can't find Uncle Bri's dress!  Sometimes I wish I could name people whatever I wanted or just call them whatever I felt like that particular day.

Story #3...The End of Summer

Tomorrow is the very last day of summer vacation for Isis.  We have done it all this summer.  Grammy camp, art camp, swim lessons, playdates, parks, pools, swimming holes, museums, outdoor concerts, blah blah blah. So what do we do when everything is done and boredom hits?  We throw in some John Prine and Old Crow Medicine Show, open up the windows, and we paint us some rocks.

And what do we do when we are bored of rock painting?  We lick the paint cause that stuff is pretty.

And what do we do after we've eaten the paint?  We paint the chickens of course!  While Eliza prefers the direct contact approach...

Isis goes for the splatter method...

And what do we do after we have painted rocks, eaten paint, and successfully painted our chicken?  We balance on produce.  TIME FOR SCHOOL!

Kar, would you rather be black barbie or be your husband and be a female barbie? You got it better I think. I like the painting rocks thing. Emma would dig that. She'd paint anything, freakin' Van Gogh she is. I hate that summer is done. AND I can't believe you caught 5 skunks. OH my WORD. You deleted an entire family there. Thanks James! Glad Isis finally got her bday present. We'll start working on Christmas now.
