Ideas

Chris brought it to my attention the other day that Isis is beginning to become more adamant about her little ideas. She is very verbal and can usually tell us what she is thinking when we ask. Well these days we don't have to ask. She just tells us. Then she thinks once she tells us that her idea will happen...immediately. And if it fails to present itself, then the tears begin to present themselves.

Ideas are good things. I like them. I have them sometimes too. But what a two-year doesn't process is the concept of time. For example, yesterday her idea was "milk." I asked her if she wanted milk and she began to cry. You see, it didn't happen quickly enough. So I sprinted to the cupboard and got her a cup and began to pour the milk. Then the really big tears came. Wrong cup. I don't know what the right cup was, because that idea only presented itself in her mind. I am not a sprinting mind reader.

Sometimes her ideas are fun and we can work with them. Today after her nap we had this conversation...
"Bye-bye."
"Oh, does Isis want to go bye-bye?"
"Brrrrrrrrrm."
"You want to go bye-bye in the car? Where do you want to go?"
"Ebees."
"You want to get ice cream?"
"Kuh-Kuh."
"You want to get ice cream with Aunt Karla?"
"Dess."
"Oh, you want to wear a dress? Where else do you want to go?"
"Mark."
"You want to go to Margaret's house?"
"Weeeeeng!"
"You want to go on the swing?"

Followed by much excitement and enthusiasm for her...a sigh of relief from me that no tears are shed. So we put on the sundress and walk to the neighbors for a swing.

I'm loving this stage of development where she has wants and opinions. One of my biggest joys in teaching was seeing kids do and think in ways that never crossed my mind. Their ideas. Her ideas. The mind of a child...so free, absorbing, irrational, so in the now, so simple and fun. Thoughts of ice cream and outdoors and swinging and car rides and...just get the damn cup right mom.

My dad said "damn" in his sermon the other day. -June (Isis so cute with pigtails).

I'm with Isis...I still like the right cup, although just recently, I did get past the crying stage. :)
