If you need your child to entertain themselves, feed them large doses of sugar.
Fall Sundays have become a highly anticipated day in our household. Usually sometime on Friday night Chris will state something like, "39 hours baby!" That is his sentence. He is counting down the hours until Eagles kickoff which is still two days away. He is highly excitable this time of year. He has even admitted in the past not being able to listen to the church sermon because he it too excited about the game. I love this in him. It is boyish innocence that he cannot contain and it is contagious.
After Isis was born Chris stated that he really wanted Sunday football to be something that Isis looked forward to. Well for the past two seasons she was much too small to care. She didn't notice that her entire outfit had little Eagles all over it. She didn't see the Eagle on her binky. She didn't seem to care that her snacks were in an Eagle cup.
Well season three is a little bit different. I decided that in an attempt to help her get excited about the game, we would make football cookies. We could talk about it beforehand and she could have the cookie after her nap while watching the game. That's probably the extent of her excitement for this year, but I think we might be on to something.
When she awoke from her nap I heard the words, "Mommy poopy Mommy. Mommy poopy Mommy..." Over and over and over. I was a little worried about what Chris was going to find in her crib or all over her wall. But instead I quickly realized she was chanting, "Mommy cookie Mommy. Mommy cookie Mommy."
So we gave her the football cookie which was a store bought sugar cookie topped with some chocolate sugar and decorated with some sugar. She sat at her little table and had a snack with her Eaglet. She yelled things at the television like "Go Eagles!" and "Uh-oh Eagles!" This was very cute and we were pleased with her enthusiasm. Until we watched her sprint through the house yelling randomness to herself hardly stopping to take a break or think about what she was doing or how loud she was or how long she had been running or why she was putting herself in timeout over and over or why she was laughing at nothing or why her face was one inch from the tv screen or why she was bonking into things and laughing run run run fall laugh get up fall laugh run roll giggle giggle splat hee hee ha ha most fun ever need more cookie.
Not only had we created excitement, we had created a sugar high and it was a spectacular show. So....the moral of the story is...if you need a few minutes to get something done, or simply want to be able to watch a little more of the game, give your child a mound of sugar. This is parenting at its best and we feel great about it.

I'm certainly hoping Jamey will not read this post- he will think it's a great idea (the kids being occupied during the game). Me, on the other hand, the one that is forced to supervise the kids in every OTHER room of the house, not so much. All that said, I am thrilled it works for you guys:-). And, my is that Isis cute.
Did Daddy have to break the news to Isis about his q-back being hurt? Or that Aunt June's Colts won? As far as the sugar....I think that's how Isis acts normally. She's crazy! Mamacita!
